Recently in the UK, a middle school teacher (who happens to be gay) resigned from his position because parents were complaining that he was giving their children a lesson in “How to be gay”. Andrew Moffat was the assistant head at Birmingham’s Chilwell Croft Academy, a school where he had designed several pro-LGBT resources. However, after coming out in an assembly and teaching a literacy lesson using a book in which a gay family attends a picnic, he was besieged by protests from parents. He said that parents didn’t want their children learning that it’s OK to be gay, and so because of that he found a teaching job elsewhere.
First of all, let me just say that this is one of the most outrageous things I’ve ever read. From what it was saying, Mr.Moffat was one of the greatest teachers to ever work at Birmingham Academy- so to lose such a highly educated man over a bunch of under educated people is actually really sad. This man had a lot of knowledge to offer these Students and it sucks that because of something stupid like this they will be missing out. I guarantee that Mr.Moffat taught nothing, but his assigned subject so for these parents to use his sexuality to mark him as a “Bad Man” is truly disgusting.
To sum all of this up, parents, fellow teachers, and just people in general need to understand that you’re sexuality does not define the way you talk, walk, work, etc. In my opinion, I think Mr.Moffat switching schools was a smart decision and i wish him the best at his new job and everything else he does.
