After declaring the environment a safe space, the youth group meeting in Davie began with group introductions and the question of the week- What is your greatest fear? It was very interesting hearing everyone’s answers: someone was scared of cats, which my cat lady friend found abominable; another friend exposed her fear of repeating images, which astounded the room. We unanimously discussed our disgust towards cockroaches, especially the ones with wings.
This week, instead of the usual weekly topic discussion, we played speed friending. Much like speed dating, we were to rotate partners and share a short conversation with them as a way to get to know each other and feel more comfortable. We were given a sheet with topic options, such as “What is your favorite holiday?” I asked if my friend and I could be together during the discussions, so we went on several triple speed friendship dates. Everyone we met was very friendly and I hope they will return next meeting to further get to know one another. We steered off from the designated conversation, began joking around, and enjoyed our newfound friendships. Of our friendship dates, I recall meeting one who loves Halloween as much as we do; one who loves to dirt bike ride and my cat lady friend got along really well with; and pretending to meet my other friend for the first time.
The meeting ended but we were enjoying ourselves so much that we continued talking. The advisors insisted that the meeting ended, so we went outside and exchanged numbers with some of our new friends so we could keep in touch. I had a wonderful time this meeting and I can definitely say that the Davie youth group is very loving and entertaining. I can’t wait until the next meeting and hopefully meet more fresh faces.
